COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMME AT VIVEK HIGH 2007-2008

1. PUSTAK School – Pustak is a school adopted by Vivek High, for under privileged children. The students regularly interact with these children by organizing their sports day, picnics, celebration of festivals like Raksha Bandhan, Diwali, Dusshera, Christmas etc. In addition, one class visits Pustak every Tuesday (One section of a class per week through out the academic session). Vivek students also hold craft workshops, Power point programmes on health issues, Child security, Story telling sessions etc.

2. People for Animals (PFA) :-

  • Institution of PFA Compassion for Animals award, for Vivek students -it's motto being Live and Help Live.
  • Regular visits to the animal shelters of PFA are made by the student members of our “Compassion for Animals Club.”
  • A radio program `Heads and Tails 'has been started on our Community Radio in which students are involved in question and answer sessions with Animal activists and the city residents regarding pet or stray animal welfare .
  • Fund Raising (in the form of cash and kind ) has been done to buy resources for the animal shelters of PFA .
  • A talk was given by Mrs. Menaka Gandhi ,chairperson of PFA, to students on compassion for animals and the role of students in animal welfare .

3. A Blood Donation Camp with the help of Blood Bank Society of Chandigarh is held annually at the school campus. The students work hard to create awarness about blood donation. These volunteers visit the Junior classes create awarness of safe donation and put up posters to support this noble cause. On the day of the camp, they help in the camp by motivating the donors, mostly parents and staff.

4. X’MAS at PGI – The students celebrate Xmas each year, at the pediatric ward for terminally sick children at PGI, a local hospital. They decorate all the 6 floors of the ward and make the hospital look bright and colourful with a huge Christmas tree in the centre.

5. Fund raising projects are taken up for the Chandigarh Society for rehabilitation of mentally handicapped people, Sahatya ( Sahyog society for cancer patients ) and other local organizations.

6. Fund raising for the Bird Hospital, Chandni Chowk, New Delhi. The members of the RS students committee and exchange students from Ballarat Grammar School, Australia baked cookies and made lemonade to raise funds to buy medicine for the ailing birds at the Hospital. Bird baths have been placed in the school campus. The water is changed regularly by the primary children during the dry summer months.

7. A `Make a friend", program has been initiated wherein students befriend an underprivileged child, spend minimum two hours a week in constructive activity like teaching, helping with the home work, craft work outings etc.

8. Vivek 90.4 FM is Chandigarh's First Community Radio Station which serves to bring the community together and focus on the common man's day to day concerns and help to realize local aspirations. The Vivek High FM is an initiative of the school to provide service to the community through the radio.

Radio, which is now enjoying renewed interest and relevance, has great potential for communication, information, awareness and entertainment.

It addresses issues relating to health, education, environment, agriculture, social development, community development etc.

9. In airing the programmes on the community radio air waves, the school engages almost the entire Vivek family of students, teachers, parents and grand parents. The endeavor is to nurture and develop the talent of the community and cater to the needs of every age group.

10. Round Square Service Projects
-Students participated in the Regional Round Square Service Project near Dehradun 2007.

11. -RSIS Project in Scottland 2007.
- RSIS Project in South Africa 2008.
-RSIS Project, Fatehpur, Dehradoon 2008.

Vivek 90.4 FM Community Radio Station

Vivek 90.4 FM is Chandigarh's First Community Radio Station which serves to bring the community together and focus on the common man's day to day concerns and help to realize local aspirations. The Vivek High FM is an initiative of the school to provide service to the community through the radio.

Radio, which is now enjoying renewed interest and relevance, has great potential for communication, information, awareness and entertainment.

It addresses issues relating to health, education, environment, agriculture, social development, community development etc.

Programmes include talks/interviews/discussions based on-

1. Diversity of Indian and Global culture.

2. Environment issues like global warming , energy conservation, garbage disposal, recycling etc.

3. Community development related to voluntary work in hospitals, old age homes, blood banks, orphanages etc.

4. Animal welfare programs.

5. Social issues like female infanticide, dowry system etc.

6. Health related issues.

Recently the CRS has secured a tie up with BBC world service to air programmes on environment, art, culture and education. In airing the programmes on the community radio air waves, the school engages almost the entire Vivek family of students, teachers, parents and grand parents. The endeavor is to nurture and develop the talent of the community and cater to the needs of every age group.
